미국 도서관 협회(American Library Association)에서는 미국에서 해마다 발행된 그림책 중에서 가장 훌륭한 책에 뉴베리 메달(문학 부문)과 칼데콧 메달(일러스트레이션 부문)을 수여한다. 1922년에 존 뉴베리의 이름을 딴 뉴베리 메달이 어린이 문학상으로 먼저 만들어 졌고 이후 그림책에 대한 관심이 증대됨에 따라 1937년부터 칼데콧 메달이 제정되었다. 19세기 영국 일러스트레이터 랜돌프 칼데콧의 이름을 따 만들어진 이 메달은 1937년 르네 폴 챔벌린이 디자인했는데 재질은 브론즈로 금색과 은색을 입혀 메달과 아너를 구분했다. 메달의 뒷면에는 수상자 이름과 년도가 적혀 있다. 메달은 금색으로 한명 혹은 한 팀에게만 수여되며 경합을 벌인 우수작은 은색 아너 메달을 받는다.
