미국 도서관 협회(American Library Association)에서는 미국에서 해마다 발행된 그림책 중에서 가장 훌륭한 책에 뉴베리 메달(문학 부문)과 칼데콧 메달(일러스트레이션 부문)을 수여한다. 1922년에 존 뉴베리의 이름을 딴 뉴베리 메달이 어린이 문학상으로 먼저 만들어 졌고 이후 그림책에 대한 관심이 증대됨에 따라 1937년부터 칼데콧 메달이 제정되었다. 19세기 영국 일러스트레이터 랜돌프 칼데콧의 이름을 따 만들어진 이 메달은 1937년 르네 폴 챔벌린이 디자인했는데 재질은 브론즈로 금색과 은색을 입혀 메달과 아너를 구분했다. 메달의 뒷면에는 수상자 이름과 명도가 적혀 있다. 메달은 금색으로 한명 혹은 한 팀에게만 수여되며 경합을 벌인 우수작은 은색 아너 메달을 받는다.

Amercian Library Association and Association of Library Service to Children
ALA는 1876년에 설립된 세계에서 가장 크고 오래된 도서관 협회이다. 다양한 도서관 서비스 및 정보망을 구축하고 있으며 사서 프로그램을 비롯한 각종 다양한 일을 한다. 칼데콧 메달이 처음 수여되었을때 도서관 사업 부서에서는 해마다 수상위원회로 5명의 학교도서관협회(School Libraries Section)를 초청하였다. 이후 이 부서는 보다 전문적으로 분류되어 ALSC로 명명된다. 칼데콧과 뉴베리를 주관하게 되었다. 1958년에 ALA의 조직 재구성이 있었지만 이 부서는 그대로 남아서 관련 어워드를 전담하고 있다 (www.ala.org / www.ala.org/alsc)

심사대상과 자격...

칼데콧메달은 매년 전 해 미국에서 출판된 가장 우수한 어린이 그림책 일러스트레이터네게 수여된다. 이때 후보자는 반드시 미국 시민권을 가진 사람이어야 하고 그리과 글을 함께 쓴 작가라도 대상에 포함된다. 또한 출품작의 메인 일러스트레이터이거나 공동일러스트레이터이어야 한다.

심사기준과 신청절차...

수상작은 이야기의 주제와 컨셉이 연속적으로 잘 구성된 통일성 있는 그림책으로 한다. 또한 어린이를 대상으로 하여야 하므로 그들의 이해력과 눈높이를 고려한 책이어야 한다. 이와 관련하여 크게 세 가지 기준이 있다. 첫째, 표현방법에 있어 예술적인 테크닉이 온전하게 발휘 되었는가. 둘째, 글의 테마와 줄거리 컨셉이 일러스트레이션을 통해 충분히 전달되고 있는가. 셋째, 어린이이 눈높이를 고려하였는가. 신청절차는 작품명을 정확히 표시해서 작품의 사본 한부를 ALSC사무국 (50 East Hurn, IL 60611-2795)으로 보내면 된다. 단 신청 마감은 출간한 해의 12월 31일이다.

뉴베리 메달과의 중복 수상이 가능한가...

1937년 처음 제정 당시에는 뉴베리 메달 위원회 멤버들이 칼데콧까지 심사했으며 두 상의 중복수상이 불가능했다. 그러나 1977년 부터는 이 부분이 수정되어 각 메달의 심사위원단이 분리되었고, 두 상의 중복 수상도 가능하게 되었다.

아너 부분에 대해..

초창기 심사위원들은 그 해에 상을 받을만한 가능성이 있는 작품을 노미네이트 시켜두고 이를 뉴베리 혹은 칼데콧 러너즈업(runners-up)으로 명명했다. 그러나 1971년 이후부터 이용어는 아너 북스라는 명칭으로 바뀌었고, 이전에 러너즈 업으로 불린 작품들도 모두 아너 북스로 통일 되었다.
